- IHI has developed a tool to identify high risks community with urinary schistosomiasis (World Health Stat. Q. 44 :150-9). The tool was validated in seven countries and it is now in WHO Schisto Manual.
- Insecticide treated nets (ITN) has contributed to 27% improvement on child survival 60% reduction of malaria and anaemia (Lancet 357). This achievement provoked national scaling up of ITN.
- Intermittent Preventive treatment in infants 59% reduction of clinical episode, anaemia (Lancet 357, 1471/1477). Tanzanian government has approved the new malaria treatment.
- Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses shows 13% reduction of deaths in under five age children. (Lancet 15;561-6). This was validated and towards global strategies.
- First biological control of adult Anopheles mosquito (Science 308: 1641-1642)
- Community effect of ITN (Plos Med 4 (7) e229. Universal coverage of ITN is encouraged.
In 2008 the Jury of the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation has prized the merits and work carried out by IHI in the struggle to put an end to the relation between disease and poverty.
